Schools and universities across the country have been closed after 6 people were killed in a violent protest against the government jobs quota system in Bangladesh.

Why are the students protesting? University students in Bangladesh are protesting against the quotas in government jobs for the families of those who fought against Pakistan in 1971.

Under this system, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities get a quota. Still, a one-third share goes to the families of those considered heroes in Bangladesh's freedom struggle. It is discriminatory and government jobs should be given only based on merit.

Student's response: How can the government do these attacks? We are saying from the beginning that we are important students. It is a matter of common understanding that 50% of jobs cannot be given to quota holders.

These protests have taken place in many cities, including the country's capital Dhaka, in which there have been clashes between opponents against the quota system and students of the ruling party Awami League, in which sticks and bricks have been used, while insu gas and rubber bullets have been used by the police. Bullets have also been fired, injuring hundreds of people.

The order of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh

On the other hand, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has said that there will be a judicial investigation into all these incidents

Statement of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh: I am clearly declaring that those who have killed, looted, and tortured, whoever they are, I will ensure that they get due punishment.

Government jobs in Bangladesh

Government jobs in Bangladesh are significant because of the six-salary system, with 50 percent of the jobs, which number in the millions, being given to certain groups in 2018 after similar protests in 2018 when the government of Khusina Jab abolished the quota system. It was recently reinstated following a court ruling which has sparked a new protest movement. I have been instructed not to leave my rooms
